Description

Ruta chalepensis

Native to Ethiopia, where it is used daily, this berry gets its name from its incredibly fruity and tangy notes reminiscent of passion fruit. While not particularly spicy, it is very potent and should be used sparingly. Grind, crushed, or whole, it lends itself to many types of dishes.

In its country of origin, this berry is used in various spice blends, notably Berbere (Ethiopian curry), which flavors Doro Wat, a national dish made with chicken and hard-boiled eggs.

It particularly enhances seafood and fish, and is also worth trying with game and poultry. Don't hesitate to flavor your sauces with this berry. We also recommend trying it in desserts; it pairs very well with fruit and chocolate.

It is also highly prized in cocktails and infused rums thanks to its captivating aroma.
